What are consonants?
Consonants are the letters in the alphabet that are not vowels (vowels are a, e, i, o, u).
For example, in the word “cat,” “c” and “t” are consonants, and “a” is a vowel.
Consonants are sounds you make by blocking airflow using your teeth, tongue, or lips. Unlike vowels, which flow freely, consonant sounds create a little roadblock in your mouth. You might use your lips to make a /p/ sound like in “pie,” or your tongue near your teeth for a /t/ sound like in “tap”.

What sounds do consonants make?
Some consonants are pronounced the same way regardless of the words they are in. For example, the sound of the letter “b” in “bat” is the same as the “b” in “buy”, “bell”, “bring”, etc. Some consonants can be pronounced differently depending on the words they are in or the letters around them. For example, the letter “c” in “cat” sounds different from the “c” in “circle.”
